Google is moving source links higher in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Here is what changed, what is not guaranteed and a practical SEO checklist.

Main report

On October 15, 2026, Google announced updates intended to make it easier to move from an AI-generated answer to the source website. Inline links in AI Mode and AI Overviews will appear higher more often. Links at the end of a response are becoming more prominent, with thumbnails and a more clickable design. Google is also expanding timely-article carousels to more countries and languages.

What Google announced

For queries where only a few official destinations are useful—such as an airline refund page—Google is testing a prominent section near the top of the answer that explains why each link matters. For current news, a headline-and-image carousel lets people compare sources. In AI Mode, selected publisher and creator names on video results may also link to searchable profiles.

The rollout status matters. Some link and carousel changes are expanding, while the official-site section and clickable profiles remain tests. Google did not promise more clicks for every site or every query.

Analysis

What it means for SEO

The opportunity is not to repeat a keyword more often. AI Search may fan a question out into multiple related searches and retrieve different supporting pages. A page that resolves one intent clearly, provides verifiable evidence and anticipates the next question may therefore become a source even when the result layout differs from classic search.

Google Search Central says there is no special AI file, dedicated schema or separate optimization required for AI Mode and AI Overviews. A page must still be indexed, eligible to show a snippet and comply with normal Search requirements. Important information should be available as text; internal links, page experience, useful images or video, and structured data that matches visible content remain foundational.

Three limits to keep in view

  • Eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing or selection as a source.
  • Search Console currently includes AI-feature traffic within the Web search type, so publishers cannot isolate every effect in a dedicated report.
  • More visible links create an opportunity, but they do not prove that every publisher will gain traffic.

What to watch

A practical citation-readiness checklist

Give each page an accurate title, an opening that answers the main question and H2 sections that separate related intents. Place numbers close to their evidence, date information that can change and distinguish announcements, tests and analysis. Add original judgment or practical guidance instead of rewriting a release.

Build topic clusters with natural internal links: a pillar page covers the broad subject, while satellite pages solve specific questions. Use original images, descriptive alt text and structured data that agrees with the public page. After publishing, monitor crawl access, indexing, queries, clicks and conversions rather than judging success by ranking alone.
