Google announced Gemini Agent on October 8, 2026. Learn what it can do, why private preview matters and how businesses should evaluate safety before deployment.

Main report

On October 8, 2026, Google Cloud introduced Gemini Agent at Gemini at Work 2026. Google describes it as a universal work agent that can plan tasks, use tools, connect to business systems and return completed work inside documents, inboxes and developer environments.

How is Gemini Agent different from a chatbot?

A chatbot mainly generates a response to a prompt. An agent can break an objective into steps and call tools to take actions. Google says Gemini Agent can handle knowledge work, create media, and write or run code from a common interface. Technology reporting also describes connections across Workspace, devices and selected third-party services.

Availability is an important qualification: the agent is in private preview for enterprise customers. The announcement does not mean that every Gemini account can already use all of these capabilities.

Analysis

TBN Grow analysis: workflow control matters more than model branding

An agent that can read email, retrieve files and update business systems may create more value than an isolated chatbot. It also expands the risk surface. A wrong answer can be corrected; an incorrect action may alter data or disclose information.

Five checks for a pilot

  • Grant only the permissions required for the selected task.
  • Require human approval before sending, deleting, paying or publishing.
  • Log tool calls, accessed data and step-level results.
  • Test against a fixed workload and measure completion, failures and manual correction.
  • Provide a way to stop the agent and recover affected data.

These are TBN Grow's evaluation recommendations, not test results for Gemini Agent. Review the actual edition's security documentation, data-processing locations and contractual terms before deployment.

What to watch

A practical starting point

Choose a low-risk workflow with clear inputs and verifiable outputs, such as turning internal documents into a draft summary. Avoid starting with processes that can delete records, send external messages or make financial decisions. Compare completion time, human interventions and cost per accepted result.

Gemini Agent reflects the shift from AI that answers to AI that performs work. Cross-system access is useful only when permissions, data and accountability are managed explicitly.
